A team of material scientists at the Institute of Advanced Materials has developed a game-changing graphene-enhanced heat exchanger material that improves thermal conductivity by 40% compared to traditional copper-aluminum alloys. Published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science, the research details how a 0.5% graphene infusion creates a microstructured surface that accelerates heat transfer while reducing material weight by 25%.

Testing on prototype air conditioner condensers showed that units incorporating the new material achieved a 12% increase in cooling capacity at the same energy input, or alternatively reduced energy consumption by 18% for equivalent cooling output. The material also demonstrated 3x better corrosion resistance in salt spray tests, extending projected service life from 15 to 25 years.

Major HVAC manufacturers including Daikin, Carrier, and Trane have already signed research partnerships with the institute, with commercial production of the graphene heat exchangers scheduled to begin in late 2025.
